Re-entry, Recidivism
Derek,
Thanks for visiting our site and in response to your question; "prisons are a business that provide employment to large numbers of people. They employ inmate labor to produce materials which is then sold to the public at reduced prices since they are able to pay inmates a pittance for their labor." Please read the 13th amendment
Amendment XIII (1865)
Now let's take into consideration that for every offender released back into society several service providers are needed. For everyone returned to prison the courts and other legal services are needed.so once there the cycle begins anew.
What's really needed is a way to reduce the recidivist rate.

This notion of private prisons and "forced" free labor goes back to the involuntary end of forced slave labor. I recently read that after the Civil War and the "end of slavery", the American prison system was dominated by white prisoners. After the war, the prison population changed to majority Black and is today dominated by Blacks and browns.
What struck me was that the change was simply a way to continue the practice of slavery with a new "twist" - because those in the prisons are criminals, not victims - enter prison camps, chain gangs, and uneven justice for the poor.
It is highly important for young all young people, those who have never been to and/or those who never want to return, that prison is a modern day slavery. We need people who know to spread the message that they don't have to fall into that trap, the road may be rough but is passable if they are prepared to avoid the traps and pitfalls. I think this is the strength of the message you can share, Winfred. None of us should let the glint and glitter of bling cause us to lose focus of our future and our goals. I would love to see your message recognized and you are in demand to speak at prisons, juvenile center, schools, churches, clubs and community centers and places of employment. I'm ever hopeful that change is possible.
