Re-entry, Recidividism,

Many returning from prisons to society generally lack the proper education and training to be successful. It is up to us to find ways to provide the necessary tools for them to survive. We imprison and release with the expectation that since one has been confined behaviors have changed. Some have and some haven't but when one returns to society he/she needs housing, clothing, employment and a support system. If he/she hasn't been given tools then how can society reasonable expect one to live a life differently than lived previously.

Re-Entry is an interesting concept. How does one establish or re-establish life after release when there are job challenges (no work record, poor educational background, loaded questions on applications and the recession), educational barriers such as no financial aid if a drug conviction, no family ties or families so financial strapped that help is virtually impossible. How does one change their life once they have a felony conviction. Most importantly, how do they survive and not turn back to what looks like the only door available - their old life? My son is trying to stay positive, is there help?

Winfred i was making the effort to watch all of the videos (haven't finished yet)so this has been sort of a delay in commenting. You've been busy seriously pulling it all together for Alternatives - it's certainly impressive and would be benefical to many as to how you (explicitly) did it!

I would like to thank you for the great work that you have accomplished in the north minneapolis community. Your extensive work with deliquent male teens and young teenage girls who had given up on life and was on the journey of crime and drugs. Your weekly workshops allowed them to see beyond the hopelessness of their immediate environment but to grasp the many opportunities that did exist right before them like returning to school, staying in compliance with their probation officers and building relationships with positive mentors.
We saw immediate changes and different choices being made by several of our teens. Your raw & honest approach with them kept their interest but it was your ability to keep your word to them. This secured total trust in how they viewed you. Our young generation has only been grant dollars to many agencies and TV props for others. Doing what you say means everything to this young generation. You proved to be different and never gave up on anyone who made an effort to move forward.
I commend you for the extrordinary workshops and will highly recommend the work that you do as a professional facilatator and speaker. Continue the great work and the many lives you will change.

To what extent do you see the nature of prisons being run like businesses in regards to prisoner re-entry? For example, it occurs to me that it is in certain best interests to find ways to return prisoners to the system as a way to maintain a cheap labor force.
